MARKS & SPENCER

MARKS & SPENCER's  overall sales increased by 0.6 per cent in the first three months of 2013, thanks to a four per cent rise in food sales. General merchandise - which includes fashion as well as homeware -saw a fall of 3.8 per cent, which was less dramatic that the six per cent dip predicted by business analysts.
"We are working hard on improving our performance in general merchandise, and despite difficult trading conditions, we made progress in our operational execution," said M&S chief executive Mark Bolland.
The British chain has made a number of high profile appointments to help realise its brand's potential over the year - and it may be too early yet for the company to have reaped the rewards of them. In 2011, former tesco.com CEO Laura Wade-Gery joined the boardas multi-channel e-commerce executive director, whileformer Jaeger and Aquascutum CEO Belinda Earl was made style director in July 2012 andformer Victoria's Secret chief creative officer Janie Schafferjoined aslingerie and beauty director in November last year. Renowned journalist and former  Daily Telegraph  fashion director Hilary Alexander was also hired for the newly-created position of Per Unafashion consultant last month while  Vogue  cover girl  Rosie Huntington-Whiteley created a lingerie line in August 2012, which quickly became the company's fastest-selling underwear range of all time.
